Why try homeopathy? Could it answer the one question you’re not asking?

As a homeopath, I often talk to people who’ve been everywhere else for help. Desperate to treat persistent conditions blighting everyday life, they feel dismissed, and every knock-back compounds the last. Visiting an array of practitioners for each one, their care feels incomplete.

Why is this problem so common? I think it’s because we’ve been taught to approach disease and disorder the wrong way. Look through any conventional health advice website, and you’ll find a catalogue of symptoms. The hope is that you’ll find something to match what you’re feeling.

But although it sounds logical and analytical, our bodies don’t really work like that.

Is there a more balanced approach?

Here’s the issue: when the symptom is the focus and it’s treated in isolation, there’s a possibility you won’t get to the root of it because you’re not looking at the whole picture. Conventional medicine tends to compartmentalise diagnosis and care, so if you’re going around in circles, never finding the answer, it’s not surprising.

This causes:

  • Frustration: yearning for someone somewhere to have a solution that works.

  • A feeling you’re not being listened to: are you making it all up? Is it all in your head?

  • A sense of being rushed: you can’t share everything you need to say in a ten-minute consultation.

  • A loss of confidence: when you know it’s all related somehow, but everyone else seems too blinkered to notice.

So you turn to alternative therapies because something has to work, right? We have an acronym in the business that goes like this:

Tried

Everything

Else

Try

Homeopathy

It makes perfect sense.

Here’s a thought: perhaps you’re asking the wrong question. Perhaps your symptoms, instead of being pesky problems to be swatted, reveal something deeper? And the answer you’re looking for involves a broader view.

How homeopathy joined the dots

Samuel Hahnemann, the creator of homeopathy was hundreds of years ahead of his time. Appalled by the savagery of medicine around him (he got his medical degree in 1779, when bloodletting was acceptable), he was eager to find a better but kinder approach. It wasn’t just about asking the right questions; it was about paying really close attention and noticing every detail along the way.

He also spoke many languages, and in his work as a translator, stumbled across an intriguing claim that Chinchona bark was effective in treating malaria. He experimented with the Peruvian bark and discovered that in microdoses, it gave him a mild version of the disease. He conjectured that if it could elicit these symptoms in a healthy person, it could cure the same symptoms in a sick person.

On the principle of ‘like treats like’, he went on to release The Organon of the Healing Art. He continued to publish his remedy research until his death at 88.

Of course, these days, we know more about Chinchona (or quinine) and its relationship to warding off malaria, but that’s not the only area in which he was groundbreaking.

Healthy connections

Against the grain of the era, he established a link between poor living conditions and disease. He insisted that it was impossible to discuss public health without talking about the impact of poor working conditions, stress, coffee, alcohol and diet on levels of chronic illness. It took hundreds of years for public policy, conventional science and medical research to catch up.

In other words, instead of focusing purely on answers, as many of his contemporaries did, he asked different questions.

This is how homeopathy still differs from conventional approaches today: it’s patient-centred. Instead of a practitioner working on a person, it’s about working with them and their body. Observation, reflection and action take place within a feedback loop, and the patient’s environment is never ignored as irrelevant detail. Health is seen as whole-person equilibrium, not just individual symptoms to be treated in isolation.

My partner in health for over forty years

Homeopathy is embedded in my life, and I’ve used it with my family, friends, pets and garden. It has supported me through gestational diabetes, migraines, and even cleared up verrucas when nothing else worked.

I fell in love with homeopathy as a teenager but it took me a while to train as a homeopath because life got in the way, as so often it does. But a chance meeting in a natural health shop led me to qualify, and now I enjoy working alongside my clients to bring balance back to life.

And I love it.

Answer the question

Homeopathy throws light on the elephant in the consulting room: why is my body producing this symptom?

Your physical issues are real, even if they’re treated as isolated inconveniences, or not recognised at all. I believe they’re valuable signposts because they’re your body’s cry for help. Your body is talking to you and as a homeopath, it’s my job to listen in and come up with some answers. That’s why the first consultation lasts for around ninety minutes, so we can apply Hahnemann’s principles, seeing you as the whole person that you are.

It’s perfectly safe for all people and ages and it works alongside conventional medicine. It’s that inclusive.

If your body is persistently crying out for help and you’ve not found something to answer the call, I can help. Book a free 15-minute discovery call and tell me about what’s bothering you so we can work out if we’re a good fit to work together.
